Hi everyone. Today we are going to make
0:02
a delicious, easy fall soup. If you know
0:06
tamali's, we're going to make a tamalei
0:08
soup. And it's going to be so easy, full
0:11
of flavor. It's tis the season for
0:14
everything this fall, including soup.
0:17
So, let's put this one together. To add
0:19
some freshness to our soup, we're going
0:21
to start off with one yellow onion.
0:24
And we're going to dice that up.
0:27
It'll add some nice flavor.
0:38
All right, we're just going to cut it in
0:39
half. Run our knife through the onion
0:42
and then dice it up.
0:49
All right, let's start sautéing down the
0:51
onion.
0:52
We're going to add one tablespoon of
0:54
cooking oil to a bottom of a large Dutch
0:57
oven or your large soup pot.
1:01
We're going to add in the onion and
1:02
start sautéing that down.
1:13
All right, we're going to get that
1:15
going.
1:17
Let's talk about this little guy here.
1:20
Now, later on in the recipe, you can add
1:22
a can of black beans, drain them, rinse
1:25
them. Now, I'm not a big fan of the
1:28
beans, so I always like to substitute a
1:31
zucchini.
1:33
And then, since we're going to do that,
1:35
we're just going to dice it up and add
1:37
it to the onion when we're about halfway
1:39
done.
1:41
So, what I'm going to do is just cut it
1:43
lengthwise.
1:44
Cut the lengthwise pieces twice
1:48
and that'll give us six pieces. This is
1:50
just a medium size, so it depends on the
1:52
size of your zucchini or if you're even
1:54
going to use a zucchini. I use it to
1:56
bulk it up.
2:01
Once we get this all diced up, we're
2:03
going to add it to the onion. Give it a
2:05
little seasoning.
2:10
We're going to season with some salt and
2:12
pepper.
2:13
[Applause]
2:14
We'll cook this down for about five
2:16
minutes.
2:19
All right, we're going to start with
2:20
adding two cans. I have one can of diced
2:23
tomatoes. We'll add the juices and all.
2:26
And then one can of whole kernel corn.
2:30
We will drain that. These are, let's
2:33
see, 14.5 oz size and around 15 oz here.
2:37
So, pretty close to that.
2:40
[Music]
2:53
and a can of corn.
3:09
All right, we're going to season with
3:11
some taco seasoning. Now, this is my
3:13
homemade blend, and you can find my big
3:16
batch taco seasoning on my website,
3:19
katherine'splates.com.
3:21
I'll put it right across right here
3:23
where you can go in and find that. Make
3:25
your own blend. That way, you don't have
3:28
all that artificialness
3:30
inside of there. All right, three
3:33
tablespoons going in.
3:40
Smells really delicious.
3:45
It's going to add a lot of flavor.
3:50
All right, go make your own.
3:54
All right, we're going to add some
3:56
tomato paste to kind of give it a more
3:57
richer flavor in there. About one
4:00
tablespoon.
4:04
There we go. All right, we're going to
4:06
add in about two cups of chicken broth.
4:10
Now, you can add beef broth if you want.
4:12
Chicken broth is a lighter flavor. It'll
4:14
help all those other flavors come
4:15
through.
4:18
All right, we're going to stir this all
4:19
together.
4:22
We kind of want to bring this to a
4:23
simmer, get all those flavors going, and
4:25
then let's talk about the tamali's.
4:30
Hang on to the flavor and some extra
4:32
broth in case you need it.
4:35
We are using a can of Hormill tumali's
4:39
beef in chili sauce.
4:44
You can use frozen tamali if you want.
4:50
This is going to be a really hearty
4:52
soup. Perfect for game day. Double up
4:55
the batch and just bowl this one out.
4:58
People are going to be amazed.
5:00
You're not making homemade tamales, but
5:03
we got a lot of flavor in there. And we
5:06
got the corn in there that'll act like
5:08
that husk flavor of the tamalei. Right.
5:13
Okay. So, we're going to come up here
5:14
and we're going to take a look at this
5:15
right here.
5:17
All right. We're going to take the
5:18
tamali's out of the can.
5:25
Now, they're wrapped in paper. And we're
5:27
going to take the paper off.
5:30
The top pieces want to come out, don't
5:32
they?
5:40
Yeah. Don't cut these with the wrappers
5:42
on them. Okay. Take that wrapper off.
5:45
It's kind of like a wax paper that keeps
5:49
these all separated.
5:55
Oh, they smell good. I love good
5:58
tamalei. I think that's all of them. I
6:02
think we have one right here.
6:04
Yeah,
6:04
they're kind of uh
6:08
falling apart there. All right. So,
6:10
we're going to take this and toss this.
6:12
All right. Now, what we want to do is
6:13
just cut these in dis.
6:16
That way, you can see the inside of the
6:18
tamalei.
6:20
Gives you a little ring.
6:26
Just like that. So, that's what it's
6:28
going to look like right there.
6:31
You'll have those in your soup.
6:37
I'm going to show you how we're going to
6:38
jazz this up. Make it look like a really
6:41
nice bowl of soup.
6:44
My dad, he loved these tamali in a can.
6:52
So, I thought I'd give them a try in a
6:53
soup.
6:57
Kind of gives a flavor of a tortilla
6:59
soup with the broth and everything. And
7:01
then we're going to add this to it.
7:04
And the only meat in the soup is what's
7:06
coming out from the tamali's here. All
7:11
right, we're going to add that to the
7:13
soup.
7:18
Cut them pretty big because I want them
7:20
to keep their shape.
7:27
All right, we're going to simmer this
7:28
for about 10 to 15 minutes. That way,
7:32
the tamales pick up all the flavors in
7:35
the soup. Look at that. Doesn't that
7:37
look delicious?
7:41
Grab a spoon, you guys. And before the
7:43
simmering is done, give it a taste and
7:45
see if you need to add anything.
7:56
Wow. I don't think I can add anything to
7:58
that. The salt level is just perfect in
8:00
there. The taco seasonings, that's
8:03
delicious.
8:06
All
8:08
right, I'm going to come back. We're
8:09
going to bowl this up and I'm going to
8:11
show you what we're going to put on top
8:12
of it.
8:15
Here it is, you guys. Now, I suggest you
8:18
use two cans of the tamali's.
8:23
All right, I'm going in for a bite.
8:27
Some of that broth, a little bit of sour
8:30
cream. Cool things down a little bit,
8:32
make it creamy.
8:35
There's my bite,
8:45
y'all.
8:47
That is delicious.
8:49
I definitely get a tamalei from that.
8:52
And all those flavors from the broth.
8:59
Mhm.
9:01
Love that corn in there. That's what you
9:04
need. Those tamales.
9:11
They're nice and puffy.
9:14
That's delicious. I get a little beef
9:16
from it.
9:20
And you determine how much heat you want
9:22
from that. If you don't want the canned
9:24
tomatoes in there, you can put like a
9:25
can of Rotel tomatoes and then lessen
9:28
the heat from your taco seasoning. Play
9:31
around with it and get the flavors that
9:33
you like.
9:37
Double up that you guys for football
9:39
season. And then double up those
9:41
tamales.
9:43
You want plenty of them in your soup.
9:46
All right, I'll see y'all on the next
9:47
episode. Bye you guys.
