Equipment

  • Bundt or tube cake pan (12 cup size)
  • large mixing bowl
  • electric handmixer
  • measuring cups & spoons
  • spatula
  • whisks & spoons
  • 3 medium bowls
  • 3 small bowls (microwave safe)

Ingredients

  • 1 (15.25oz) box White Cake Mix
  • + ingredients listed on back of box (oil, eggs, & water
  • red gel food color
  • blue gel food color
  • 1 (16oz) tub Rich & Creamy Vanilla Frosting

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a (12 cup) tube or bundt cake pan with non-stick cooking spray with flour in it. (Make sure to spray into every nook & cranny to help release cake.
NOTE: You can also grease and flour your pan generously.
  • In a large mixing bowl, using an electric hand mixer on medium speed, beat cake mix and ingredients lists on back of cake mix box (water, eggs, and oil) for 2 minutes, scraping the inside of bowl a few times.
  • NOTE: I make this cake a "bakery style". Just switch out the water for milk, 4 eggs instead of the 3, and melted butter for the oil. (Make sure to cool melted butter a little bit so the eggs don't scramble.
  • Divide cake batter into 3 medium bowls evenly. (I use a 1/2 cup measuring tool to make the division equally.)
  • In one of the bowls of cake batter blend enough blue food coloring for a rich blue color.
  • In another bowl of cake batter blend enough red food gel coloring for a rich red color.
  • Spoon the red cake batter into the bottom of the prepared tube or bundt cake cake and spread evenly. Spoon the white cake batter with "no" food color on top of the red cake batter. Smooth evenly, but don't over do it.
  • Spoon the blue cake batter on top of the white batter forming a ring in the center of white batter. (Make sure with this layer you can still see the white cake batter on the edges.)
  • Bake in preheated oven per instructions on back of cake box for a Bundt size pan. Check with a toothpick for doneness. Remove cake from oven and allow to sit for 10 minutes in the pan.
  • Place a serving plate or cake dish upside down on the cake pan and carefully flip over. Cake should pop right on out. Remove cake pan. Allow cake to cool completely before next step. (Takes about 1 hour.)
  • Divide vanilla frosting into 3 small microwavable bowls. 1 bowl place 1/4 cup, 2nd bowl place 1/4 cup, and 3rd bowl place the rest of frosting. Place the bowl that has the most frosting (this would be the 3rd bowl that you did) into microwave for 10-15 seconds or until it's thin enough to drizzle.
  • Using a spoon drizzle frosting back and forth over cake.
  • Microwave 2nd small bowl of frosting. Add in enough gel food coloring to get a nice blue color. Drizzle back and forth over cake.
  • Microwave 1st small bowl of frosting. Add in enough gel food coloring to get a nice red color. Drizzle back and forth over cake.
  • Let stand until frosting has set about 30 minutes. Cut in to see the red, white, and blue on the inside. Enjoy.
