Equipment

  • cutting board & large sharp knife
  • large deep skillet or 9 x 13 baking dish
  • measuring spoons & cup
  • tongs
  • plate

Ingredients

  • 1 head green cabbage
  • 2-3 TBS olive oil
  • 4 TBS butter
  • 1 – 2 medium yellow onions, sliced
  • 1 TBS garlic, minced
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/4 tsp each garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, shredded

Instructions

IMPORTANT – this recipe calls for using an oven proof skillet as it will go from the stove top to the oven. NOTE – you can use a 9 x 13 for this recipe. Cook the onion sauce in the skillet per instructions then place into the 9 x 13. Place browned cabbage wedges in sauce and spoon sauce on tops of wedges. Follow rest of instructions for oven.

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Remove bottom portion of core from cabbage. Remove one leaf of cabbage and rinse cabbage off. Cut cabbage into small wedges. (cut enough of the wedges to fill a large deep skillet.)
  • Heat olive oil in deep oven proof skillet over medium heat. Place cabbage wedges into hot skillet. Cook until cabbage wedges are golden brown on the bottom. Flip them over and cook that side until golden brown.
  • Remove browned cabbage wedges from skillet and place onto a plate. Set aside.
  • In same skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add in sliced onions and cook until softened and slightly caramelized. Add in garlic and cook for 1 minute while stirring.
  • Add in softened cream cheese. Mix well to coat the onions. Season with your favorite seasonings (garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, to name a few).
  • Pour in chicken broth and stir. Sprinkle in parmesan and stir once more. Place in preheated oven for 50 minutes. Serve it up.
