  • 14 pieces white sandwich bread (DIVIDED)
  • 1 TBS stone ground dijon mustard
  • 1 TBS strawberry or raspberry jam
  • 1 lb thin sliced deli ham (I used black forrest) (DIVIDED)
  • 12 oz swiss & gruyere cheese, shredded (DIVIDED)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • powdered sugar, to serve with
  • extra jam, to serve with

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spread 1 TBS butter evenly throughout a 9 x 13 deep casserole dish.
  • Place 5 pieces of white bread on bottom of prepared baking dish in one layer. The 5th piece will be cut in half to fit.
  • Spread a tiny bit of stone ground mustard evenly on each piece of bread in casserole dish. Loosely lay 1/2 of the ham across the bread in casserole dish. Top with 3 oz of shredded cheese.
  • Place 4 pieces of bread on top of the cheese. Spread a tiny bit of jelly on each piece of bread evenly. Loosely lay rest of the ham across the bread. Top with 3 oz of shredded cheese. Top with 5 pieces of bread. Sprinkle 3 oz shredded cheese on bread.
  • In a large mixing bowl whisk eggs, milk, and seasonings (salt, black pepper, and nutmeg) until frothy and combined.
  • Pour egg mixture over the top layer of cheese covered bread and in between the bread to allow to soak to middle and bottom layers. Top with additional 3 oz shredded cheese.
  • Place in preheated oven uncovered for 35-40 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden. Cut into squares. Serve it up with powdered sugar and a side of jam. Enjoy.

I just have to say, l recognize where you get your groceries from. I shop at HEB too. I am so surprised how many cooks there are on here from south Texas. I watched your goolash tecipe then saw your one for the monte cristo sandwich. They both look great. Will watch more, but just wanted to say hi from a Texas girl too. I was raised in San Antonio until 2016. I traveled, then sold my house and moved to Bandera after mom passed. Enjoying your recipes. Lucy
