Welcome back everyone. I'm Catherine.
0:03
>> I'm Thomas. If
0:04
>> y'all don't know, he's my husband. He's
0:06
usually behind the other side of the
0:08
camera, but we got him inside the front
0:10
end of the camera because we are going
0:12
to make a fireworks Fourth of July poke
0:16
cake. It's a blueberry flavor. It's
0:19
going to be really delicious. And y'all
0:21
probably saw the thumbnail that showed
0:23
that beautiful fireworks on the cake.
0:26
All right, you guys. We're going to make
0:27
it really simple.
0:28
>> Mhm. How are we doing that
0:30
>> right here?
0:32
>> We're using a box cake mix. Thomas is
0:34
going to empty out the box and put it
0:35
into a medium to large size bowl. And
0:39
then we're going to add the ingredients.
0:41
Now, there's two different ways you can
0:43
do this. You can use the ingredients
0:47
listed on the back of your cake mix box,
0:51
or you can make it bakery style, which
0:54
just changes the three ingredients just
0:57
a little bit. But it makes it more
0:59
fluffier. It gives it a better flavor to
1:02
it. Now, it's going to be delicious.
1:06
Now, this is a blueberry cake, and since
1:10
it's a fireworks cake, and we need red,
1:12
white, and blue for Fourth of July,
1:15
we're using the classic white cake. Or
1:19
you can try to use the French vanilla if
1:22
you want to do that. Just anything
1:23
that's going to give you a white look to
1:25
the cake. Ah, he did it. Yeah.
1:28
>> Yeah. Wow.
1:30
>> He works well with others.
1:33
>> That was hard.
1:34
>> Now, we're gonna make it bakery style.
1:36
So, the first ingredient that it calls
1:38
for is one cup of water. We're going to
1:40
change that
1:42
to what?
1:44
>> One cup of milk.
1:46
>> One cup of milk
1:47
>> going in.
1:51
>> You do the eggs.
1:52
>> I do the eggs. Okay.
1:55
We got four eggs. Now, the box calls for
1:58
three. Yep. All right.
2:02
Boom. There you go. I'm going to crack
2:04
them all into my bowl here. And then I'm
2:07
going to put the shells in here. That
2:09
way we can make sure there's no shells
2:11
going inside of our mix there.
2:14
Y'all have any plans for the Fourth of
2:16
July?
2:19
I think ours is just sitting in front of
2:21
the TV that night listening to all the
2:25
fireworks.
2:27
>> All the money going up in smoke.
2:29
Literally.
2:30
How many of y'all buy fireworks?
2:33
I used to. I don't do it anymore.
2:36
>> Yep. We did when we had the kids were
2:38
younger, but they're no longer here, so
2:40
they got their own plans.
2:42
>> We had one flip over on its side and was
2:44
shooting stuff everywhere. It was fun.
2:46
>> I know.
2:48
All right, we're going to add four eggs
2:50
to the mix.
2:51
>> Is gone. Oh, this is your owl one.
2:53
>> Yeah, my owl. One, two, three, and four.
2:57
And then it calls for half a cup of
3:01
vegetable oil.
3:03
>> We going to use butter.
3:05
>> Butter.
3:06
>> Okay, that won't scramble the eggs.
3:08
>> Nope. When you melt your butter, which
3:10
is half a cup or one stick, make sure
3:13
you cool it down just a little bit. I
3:15
would do that before you start
3:16
everything else. That way you can take
3:17
the heat off of that butter because
3:19
it'll scramble your eggs and we don't
3:21
want that.
3:22
>> That won't be good. Chunky eggs in a
3:23
cake. No, that's not good.
3:26
>> There we go. There we go. We're good.
3:30
>> Give me that power tool.
3:33
>> We're going to use an electric hand
3:35
mixer and we're going to blend that all
3:38
together. Now, to get a really fluffy
3:40
batter, we're going to beat this for
3:42
about two minutes to get it well
3:45
combined and very fluffy.
3:47
And then we'll be back. Look at that
3:50
fluffy batter.
3:52
We are done with that. Let's go ahead
3:54
and start getting our baking pan ready.
3:57
Grab a 9 by13.
3:59
I got a pretty deep one here, which is
4:01
probably what you're going to need if
4:02
you've got one of those. Now, I'm going
4:03
to take some cooking spray, and we have
4:05
one that has flour in it. And we're
4:07
going to spray the whole baking dish
4:09
with it.
4:11
That way the cake can come out of the
4:13
baking dish here.
4:16
Woo! Hold your breath.
4:23
There we go. We'll be back.
4:27
Just kidding. Smells buttery.
4:30
>> All right. Now, you're going to take all
4:32
your batter with your blue spatula and
4:34
your blue bowl. Turn the door down. Here
4:37
we go. And then you're going to place it
4:38
into the baking dish. Oh, look how
4:41
fluffy that looks.
4:42
>> Yeah, I did good. Huh? You
4:44
>> did.
4:46
>> All right. Get all of it out. That's a
4:48
piece of cake in there.
4:51
>> That's your piece of cake in there.
4:57
All right. Once you get all of your
4:58
batter into the baking dish,
5:02
we're going to smooth it out nice and
5:05
even. We're going to bake the cake per
5:07
the directions on the back of the
5:09
package. And ours is going to go in for
5:12
>> uh goes in at 350 for 23 to 28 minutes
5:18
for 13 by9.
5:19
>> There you go. Now, once the cake is
5:22
done, there it is. Once the cake is
5:25
done, we're going to cool it down
5:27
completely and then we're going to come
5:29
back. We're going to poke holes in it.
5:31
We got a few ingredients to put inside
5:33
of the poke cake to make it blueberry
5:36
and then we're going to have some fun
5:37
icing it to get it that
5:41
firework.
5:41
>> There we go. All right, you guys. We'll
5:43
be back. All right, we have the mystery
5:45
bowl.
5:48
The cake is out of the oven. We've
5:50
cooled it down completely. I've given
5:52
Thomas a tool.
5:56
He's going to use the end of it. You
5:59
want to get a large
6:01
kitchen utensil that has something on
6:04
the end that can
6:07
poke a lot of holes through your cake.
6:10
I'm going to bring y'all up here so
6:11
y'all can see what he's doing. Just like
6:13
this.
6:16
Just go down and kind of twist and then
6:18
come up.
6:20
We're going to do that throughout the
6:21
whole cake. We're going to leave about
6:23
one inch between the holes
6:26
because we got some good stuff going in
6:27
there. Yeah, he's got it, you guys.
6:32
>> No, I don't. I'm good at faking it.
6:35
>> Now, when he gets down to the end, I'm
6:37
going to show you the two ingredients
6:38
that we're going to mix together that
6:40
we're going to pour on top.
6:42
And you're going to need these holes
6:44
pretty large there.
6:51
There you go.
6:53
>> That's what it looks like.
6:56
Have Thomas open these up. These should
6:57
be really easy to open. We got the pop
7:00
tops on them.
7:02
>> One is a sweetened condensed milk, which
7:05
is 14 oz sweetened condensed milk.
7:11
We'll get that into a medium bowl. And
7:13
we're going to mix that together with a
7:16
21 oz size can of blueberry pie filling
7:21
and topping.
7:23
Well, I'll switch you out with you.
7:26
There you go. This stuff's good. I'm not
7:29
going to lick it. Nope.
7:30
>> Yeah, I didn't either.
7:33
>> Oh, you lied.
7:35
>> Oh, that was good.
7:36
>> You hurt my feelings.
7:40
>> Well, this one. No, we don't want any
7:43
now.
7:46
>> Who both can?
7:47
>> Yep. Can you imagine both of those put
7:50
together?
7:53
All right. Oh, you got the spatula.
7:56
>> We're going to blend these two together.
8:00
Look at this.
8:02
Look at that. As I'm tripping over my
8:03
dog down here.
8:05
>> Yeah, she's good at making you trip. And
8:08
then what we're going to do once we get
8:09
that all mixed together is we're going
8:11
to bring over the cake with the holes.
8:17
And then we're going to
8:20
pour on top
8:23
everywhere.
8:26
And I'll see if Thomas wants to spread
8:27
this around. You want to spread it?
8:29
>> No. I want to lick the bowl.
8:31
>> He wants to lick the bowl.
8:35
All right. We'll give him enough that he
8:36
can lick the bowl.
8:37
>> There you go.
8:38
>> What do you want the spatula, too?
8:39
>> Yes.
8:39
>> Oh, boy.
8:40
>> I'm greedy.
8:43
>> Now, I'm going to smooth this out and
8:45
just kind of press the blueberry mixture
8:49
into the holes of the cake.
8:53
>> Tell you what, that's good.
8:56
>> Are y'all watching him?
9:00
Just press
9:02
>> press. Good.
9:03
>> I better stop.
9:07
Now, what I'm doing is just pulling it
9:10
across,
9:11
getting it into the holes there.
9:15
All right. You can see how they're just
9:16
falling right into the holes as I'm
9:18
scraping it along. See? And then we're
9:20
going to create one single layer here.
9:29
Do I get that?
9:31
>> Yes, you can have it.
9:32
>> I'm trying that right now. Now, the next
9:35
step is we're going to take a tub of
9:38
Cool Whip, thaw it out, and we're going
9:40
to pull it right out of the refrigerator
9:42
right now. It's going to be nice and
9:43
cold, and we're going to spoon it
9:47
or dollop it all over the blueberry pie
9:52
filling mixture here.
9:56
>> And they don't make it easy, do they?
10:02
Got it.
10:03
>> There we go. My good.
10:06
>> And this is 8 oz.
10:08
>> So, I'm just going to spoon it
10:10
everywhere I can.
10:11
>> That way, it'll be easy to spread
10:16
and we'll be able to decorate.
10:19
And what you don't want to do is mix the
10:21
Cool Whip with that blueberry layer
10:23
there too much. Try not to.
10:28
And I hope you have an offset spatula.
10:31
That will really help. Here's my offset
10:34
spatula. If you don't know what one is,
10:36
go get it. It really helps with icings
10:39
and that. So, what I'm going to do is
10:41
just create a single layer
10:45
very carefully. And now what I'm going
10:47
to do is just kind of smooth it out.
11:00
And then we're going to get a paper
11:01
towel, go around the edges, clean it up,
11:05
and then we're going to decorate. Now,
11:06
we're going to decorate it with
11:08
fireworks. And I found a design that I
11:10
really wanted to try. And you just need
11:13
some blueberries and some strawberries.
11:16
And
11:18
I'm going to be using some Ready Whip to
11:21
end it all with. We're just gonna end it
11:23
all. So, all right. So, the first thing
11:25
we're going to do is we've got
11:27
blueberries
11:29
and we've got some strawberries. And I
11:31
don't think we're gonna need all these
11:32
strawberries because they're just going
11:33
to be the tops of the firework there.
11:35
We've already cleaned these off. So,
11:37
we're going to start with the
11:38
blueberries and we're going to decorate.
11:39
I'm going to show you how we're going to
11:40
do that. And then we'll end with the
11:42
strawberries and then we'll do the
11:44
outside
11:46
design there. All right, y'all. Come on
11:48
up. I'm scared.
11:51
Now, while I'm putting the blueberries
11:53
on the cake, Thomas is going to slice
11:56
some of these slice strawberries here.
11:59
He's just going to take off the top and
12:01
then slice them. You probably get about
12:03
four slices long ways on these
12:06
strawberries here. All right, you guys.
12:08
Let's go. We're going to make our
12:10
fireworks. So, I'm going to take some
12:11
blueberries.
12:13
I'm going to start right here about one
12:15
inch away from the edge there. And we're
12:18
going to come in like you know the
12:20
fireworks. Woo. Just like that. All
12:22
right. And as we're getting over here,
12:24
we're going to start making them a
12:26
little bigger.
12:32
>> Oh,
12:33
strawberries are good.
12:36
>> And don't go all the way to the edge.
12:38
Remember, we have to leave that one
12:39
inch, but we need to put strawberries
12:41
there, too. So, I'm going to be coming
12:43
through with just a single right here.
12:47
We go. So, hang on to your blueberries.
12:51
And then we're going to take the
12:52
strawberries.
12:55
And we're gonna start right here. One,
13:01
two,
13:04
three.
13:05
Need some extra here. Four.
13:09
And then we're going to put five right
13:11
here.
13:13
Right there.
13:16
Then we're going to put some blueberries
13:17
right in the center.
13:22
There we go.
13:28
Four and five. And then we'll put some
13:33
blueberries right in there.
13:36
There we go. One over here. All right,
13:39
y'all. Look at that. Is that cool or
13:42
what? Can y'all see it? Okay, there they
13:45
go.
13:47
Right
13:49
now, I'm going to get my
13:52
whipped topping.
13:54
Now, you want to keep it very close to
13:57
the edge here. And we're going to go.
14:00
Just like that.
14:05
Leave about an inch in between. And then
14:07
Thomas is going to follow up behind me
14:10
with a blueberry right in the center.
14:12
>> I am.
14:12
>> He is. I didn't know that.
14:15
>> Yep.
14:16
>> Let me see if that's in my contract.
14:18
>> Just a little dollop, you guys.
14:29
There we go. Now, I have a firecracker
14:33
bunt cake that I did. Y'all go check
14:35
that one out. Oh my goodness, that was
14:38
awesome.
14:42
And um if I think about it, I'll link it
14:44
down below, but
14:47
I don't know, you guys. All right, then
14:49
we're going to show you the finished
14:50
product here.
14:54
I impressed myself.
14:56
All right, you guys. What do you think?
14:58
There it is. There's my fireworks Fourth
15:02
of July blueberry poke cake using boxed
15:06
cake mix. As easy as that. There you go.
15:09
Y'all see that? Fabulous. I could have
15:13
done the flag, but I've done the flag
15:14
for y'all several times. I wanted to do
15:17
fireworks.
15:18
>> Yep.
15:18
>> All right, we're going to chill this in
15:20
the refrigerator to kind of pull it all
15:22
together, and then we're going to come
15:23
back. We're going to take a piece, give
15:25
it a try for you. Look at those layers
15:28
right there. Oh my gosh.
15:31
Look how delicious that looks.
15:39
There it is.
15:44
Look at those layers.
15:47
All right, Thomas and I are going to
15:48
give it a try for you.
15:53
I can't wait to try that.
15:59
Here we go.
16:12
I made a mess.
16:14
>> She's good at that.
16:17
>> That sweetened condensed milk with those
16:20
blueberries.
16:22
Over the top. Over the top delicious.
16:25
>> Yep.
16:27
>> Wow.
16:30
That cake.
16:33
Mhm.
16:35
They're good.
16:40
>> It's delicious, you guys. There's so
16:43
many robust flavors in there.
16:48
Yep. It holds up so well. Thumbs up on
16:51
this one. Thumbs up to this guy here for
16:55
helping.
16:58
All right, you guys. Happy Fourth of
17:00
July coming up. I hope y'all enjoy it.
17:03
Let us know what you're making.
17:06
I don't think we're making anything.
17:08
>> Nope.
17:09
>> We're just going to sit back and chill.
17:12
>> We're just chilling.
17:13
>> All right. Make sure that you hype this
17:15
video, share this video, comment. Okay,
17:19
and then we'll see y'all on the next
17:21
episode. Happy 4th. Bye, you guys.
17:24
>> Bye.
