Which one do you want? They're gooey.
0:03
They're buttery and chocolate. Two
0:05
layers of goodness right here in my cake
0:09
bars. Let's make them. Now, to make the
0:11
gooey chocolate butter cake bars, as you
0:14
can see, these are the only ingredients
0:15
that you're going to need, and there's
0:17
seven of them. And the first one is
0:20
going to be your cake mix. I'm using the
0:23
dark chocolate fudge. That just sounds
0:26
delicious, but you can use any type of
0:29
chocolate cake mix that you want. Even a
0:32
devil's food cake would be great with
0:34
this recipe. You're going to need some
0:37
vanilla extract.
0:40
You're going to need one stick or half a
0:43
cup of very soft butter. Now, what I
0:47
like to do is pull this out the night
0:49
before and just let it rest on my
0:50
countertop to get nice and you know the
0:53
word, squishy. That's what you want. All
0:56
right. Now, I've got four eggs. And what
1:00
I did was just bring these to room
1:01
temperature. So, I just pulled them out
1:03
about 30 minutes or so before I'm going
1:05
to make this recipe. Just let them sit
1:07
on the countertop. Now, these are going
1:09
to be divided. So, there's going to be
1:11
two at the beginning of the recipe and
1:12
two at the other part of it.
1:14
And you're going to need some cream
1:16
cheese. I have one block, which is 8 oz.
1:20
And you want this at room temperature
1:22
also. So, while I'm pulling the eggs
1:24
out, I'm pulling out the cream cheese.
1:26
It needs to set out for an hour to get
1:30
nice and what's the word? Squishy.
1:32
Right.
1:34
You're going to need some unsweetened
1:37
cocoa powder. Now, this is what I use
1:39
right here.
1:41
And then you're going to need a whole
1:42
lot
1:44
of powdered sugar. So, I had to go get
1:46
another bag of this. Make sure I had
1:48
enough.
1:50
Okay. Now, we're going to be using a
1:52
large mixing bowl, an electric hand
1:54
mixer to get started. There's going to
1:56
be two layers. They're going to come
1:57
together pretty quickly, and then it's
1:59
all going to bake together as one cookie
2:02
bar. All right, you guys. Let's go ahead
2:04
and get started. In the large mixing
2:06
bowl, we're going to empty out one box
2:08
of chocolate cake mix. Now, this is
2:11
15.25 25 oz size cake mix.
2:30
All right. To the cake mix, we're going
2:32
to add in the one stick or half a cup of
2:35
very soft, squishy butter.
2:47
Make sure you get it all out of there.
2:52
What kind of butter do y'all like to
2:53
use? Now, this is salted butter. You can
2:56
use unsalted if you want. I'm using the
3:00
KY Gold Irish butter.
3:03
We're going to blend this until it's
3:04
well combined.
3:10
You want that butter into that cake mix.
3:22
What we're going to do is crack one egg
3:24
in.
3:30
We're going to beat that in.
3:35
And then we'll crack the other egg in.
3:46
We're going to mix that in.
3:53
Now, we want to mix this until
3:54
everything is incorporated in the bowl
3:56
here. Now, it's going to be a thick
3:58
batter.
4:02
There we go.
4:05
Perfect.
4:08
We're going to be baking in a 9 by13
4:10
baking dish and we're going to spray it
4:12
with some non-stick cooking spray. Now,
4:15
I like to use the Baker's Joy or you can
4:17
use a non-brand. This is the one that
4:20
has baking spray with the flour in it.
4:29
There we go.
4:33
Now, we're going to bring the cake
4:35
batter over here and we're going to
4:37
spoon it into the baking dish.
4:43
Now, we're using the 9 by13. We're going
4:45
to need it. You're going to think not,
4:47
but when you see it done, you're going
4:48
to go, "Oh, that's why." Okay. So, I'm
4:52
going to spoon the batter all over the
4:54
baking dish here.
4:58
That way, it's easy to spread.
5:03
Thomas wanted to try this recipe out.
5:05
So, we're we're doing that. [laughter]
5:09
Now, the best tool to use to spread that
5:11
evenly across your baking dish is a
5:15
offset spatula. So, the offset spatula
5:18
is going to look like this right here.
5:20
And it really helps to spread out any
5:22
kind of frostings, icings, cake batters,
5:26
whatever you got that's thick so that it
5:28
goes where you want it. There we go.
5:31
So just take and spread this evenly
5:34
across the bottom.
5:37
Nice and even.
5:40
Now the cake mix does have a
5:42
leavenvening agent in it that will help
5:44
rise the cake.
5:48
Yeah, this is very fudgy consistency.
5:54
Try to get it nice and even.
6:01
All right, there it is.
6:04
Let's make that second layer. So, when
6:06
you're making that second layer, you are
6:07
going to be using your electric hand
6:09
mixer again. So, what you want to do is
6:12
just clean off your beers and then get a
6:14
separate bowl. Now, I'm in a large
6:16
mixing bowl and we're going to add in
6:20
the one pack of cream cheese, 8 oz. Now,
6:23
I'm using the block and you want to make
6:26
sure this is very soft. like I talked
6:28
about at the very beginning.
6:39
All right, there we go. Now, what I'm
6:41
going to do is just blend this for just
6:43
about 30 seconds or so to get that nice
6:45
and creamy before we start adding stuff.
6:50
There we go. You just want to break it
6:52
up, get it moved around the bowl
6:54
somewhat like that.
6:56
There we go.
6:58
All right. What did y'all miss? I had
7:00
the cream cheese in there that we
7:03
blended until it was nice and soft in
7:05
there. Then I added in the two
7:07
tablespoon of
7:10
cocoa powder.
7:13
That was the unsweetened version. And
7:15
then I added in one teaspoon of vanilla
7:19
extract. I think y'all missed that whole
7:21
section right here. And I'm very sorry
7:23
for that. And then I cracked two eggs
7:25
into a bowl, added it in there, and then
7:28
we just blended it with the electric
7:30
hand mixer until we had a good mix on it
7:33
like this. It doesn't have to be perfect
7:35
because we're going to go in and still
7:37
combine
7:39
our powdered sugar,
7:45
which we're going to be doing about
7:48
four cups. So, we're going to put in one
7:51
cup at a time and get that mixed in.
7:57
Now, this is a dessert, you guys.
8:02
So, I love how I'm when I make a
8:04
dessert, y'all are like, "Oh, it's too
8:05
sweet. It's too this." Well, it is a
8:07
dessert. We're going to put it on a low
8:10
setting. Am I on? There we go. And we're
8:12
going to get that mixed in. And then
8:14
we'll add the second cup.
8:18
Now, we're not going to see what
8:19
happens, but y'all, things happen,
8:21
right? There we go. There's my mess.
8:24
[laughter]
8:25
All right, let's add the second cup.
8:29
I'll clean all that up for y'all. I got
8:32
a dog down here. Oh my gosh. Thomas is
8:36
happy for the dessert,
8:39
but is he happy that people are coming
8:40
over to eat his dessert? [laughter]
8:42
Those people will be Megan and Joseph.
8:49
So, we're excited to have them over. All
8:51
right, that's two.
8:54
All right, what I'm going to do now is
8:57
add that last
8:59
cup of powdered sugar in.
9:04
And then we'll clean up this mess of
9:06
powdered sugar. Sorry, you guys.
9:13
Make sure you get your spatula and pull
9:15
start pulling down the sides at this
9:17
point
9:19
so we can get all of that powdered sugar
9:21
incorporated.
9:24
This is a new recipe for us. Yes, it is.
9:29
So, um, we're super excited about it.
9:32
Looks delicious.
9:35
I've made ooey gooey cakes before,
9:39
but not this way. So,
9:42
all right. You should have a nice creamy
9:44
consistency there.
9:50
Now, if you do, you're ahead of the
9:52
game. So, am I.
9:57
Yeah. Nice and smooth. Did y'all see
10:00
that coming? Look at that.
10:04
All right. We're going to pour this on
10:06
top of the cake batter.
10:09
>> [sighs]
10:10
>> in the 9 by13 baking dish.
10:13
All right. All we did was take this
10:15
batter, that cream cheese cocoa one, and
10:18
poured it right on top of the cake mix.
10:22
We're just going to spread it out nice
10:24
and even.
10:27
We're not combining this with that
10:29
bottom layer. We're just setting it
10:31
right on top.
10:37
There we go.
10:39
All right, I'm just going to clean off
10:40
the edges here.
10:44
I've got my oven preheated at 350°.
10:47
We're going to bake this for 45 minutes
10:51
and then we're going to cool it down
10:52
completely before we cut it into bars.
10:56
Y'all going to see the magic happen.
10:59
Gooey chocolate butter cake bars. It's
11:03
two layers baked into one. Let's cut
11:06
these up. Let me show you the final
11:08
product. All right. Cut them like
11:11
brownies.
11:13
Which one do you want? They're gooey.
11:16
They're buttery. And chocolate. Two
11:19
layers of goodness right here in my cake
11:22
bars.
11:25
Thomas is brewing more coffee.
11:27
[laughter]
11:28
Here's my bite.
11:36
What is going on?
11:39
We got that cake layer down there on the
11:41
bottom. Oh my goodness. And then we have
11:44
that cocoa cream cheese mixture on top.
11:48
Wow.
11:52
Mhm.
11:59
So, it's like a cake on the bottom and
12:01
it's kind of a goooness on the top.
12:04
Chocolate all the way through.
12:07
Those are delicious. You need a fork for
12:09
it.
12:10
[laughter]
12:12
All right, you guys. I think Thomas' has
12:14
his eye on this plate right here, don't
12:16
you?
12:16
>> Oh, yeah.
12:19
>> Thumbs up on this one on my gooey
12:21
chocolate butter cake bars. Look at
12:24
that. Think Joseph and Megan are going
12:26
to be happy tonight.
12:28
Thomas has to
12:29
>> There's any left.
12:30
>> Thomas has to give some up. There will
12:31
be some left.
12:32
>> I [clears throat] may hide them.
12:34
There'll be some left. All right, you
12:35
