we're going to make a Granny's cocoa
0:02
cream pie.
0:04
This recipe takes Thomas all the way
0:06
back to when he would always run to his
0:08
grandma's house
0:10
and he called her Granny. And she would
0:13
make him all kinds of things over there.
0:14
He loved going over there. It's really
0:17
easy because we're going to be using a
0:19
already baked pie crust.
0:22
And we're just going to use the ready
0:24
crust and we're using the chocolate.
0:26
Now, he seems to recall the regular pie
0:29
crust being baked off and then the
0:31
mixture going in.
0:33
But he wants to try it with the
0:34
chocolate. So, chocolate it is. There's
0:36
only six other ingredients and they're
0:38
all going to go into a medium saucepan
0:41
and we're going to cook that up and then
0:43
it's going to get poured into the pie
0:45
crust and then set until it becomes a
0:48
pie. And that's it, you guys. Okay? So,
0:52
the first thing we're going to do is we
0:53
need to take three large eggs and I just
0:57
slightly brought them to room
0:59
temperature and we're going to crack
1:01
them and then divide it between the
1:03
whites and the yolks.
1:06
And then the whites go away. Whatever
1:08
you want to do with them. So, let's get
1:09
busy and start with that step.
1:13
All right, just crack your egg and then
1:15
we're going to split it in half
1:21
and then drop the whites into one bowl.
1:24
Go back and forth
1:26
to get all the whites out.
1:35
There we go.
1:37
And then we'll put the yolk in a a
1:39
separate bowl.
1:47
These shells are very thin.
1:52
All right, and there's the three.
1:54
Now, I'm going to grab a fork
1:57
and then I'm just going to beat the egg
1:58
yolks
2:00
all together there. You just want to do
2:02
this step ahead of time so that you're
2:04
ready for it.
2:06
There we go.
2:09
The next step is we're going to take a
2:11
medium saucepan and I'm going to meet
2:13
you back there on the stove.
2:17
Now, at this stage we are not going to
2:18
turn on the burner until we get five of
2:21
those ingredients into our pan.
2:24
First thing we're going to add
2:26
is 1 and 1/2 cups white granulated
2:28
sugar.
2:31
It's a pie,
2:33
so it's going to be sweet. I'm using
2:35
half a cup,
2:36
so I'm going in three times.
2:39
Now, we're going to add in half a cup of
2:42
cocoa powder, unsweetened. This is what
2:44
I'm using right here.
2:48
I'm going in with a quarter cup,
2:51
so I'm going to go in two times
2:53
cuz it fits into the container here.
2:56
There we go.
2:58
Now, we're going to place in a quarter
3:00
cup of cornstarch.
3:03
That'll be our thickener.
3:07
Now, we're going to add in
3:09
our three beaten egg yolks.
3:18
Simple, you guys.
3:22
There we go.
3:23
We're going to add in a quarter teaspoon
3:25
of salt.
3:31
1 tsp vanilla extract.
3:39
Take a whisk and we're going to blend
3:40
this all together.
3:43
We don't have the stove on yet.
3:48
Now, once we get that nice and combined,
3:53
we're going to put our burner onto a
3:55
medium-high heat.
4:00
What you're going to need is two cups of
4:02
cold milk, and we're going to slowly,
4:04
very slowly, pour this in
4:13
until we get everything nice and
4:14
combined over the heat.
4:20
That way we get a nice creamy
4:22
consistency.
4:27
Don't dump it all in there. You're going
4:29
to have some lumps you're not going to
4:30
be able to get out.
4:32
Woo, there we go.
4:35
Okay.
4:36
And then keep going at it.
4:39
There we go.
4:44
Thomas is going to be so happy.
4:48
It's not a pudding one, so it's not like
4:50
you're opening up a box of pudding
4:54
and whipping it with whipped topping or
4:56
Cool Whip and making a pie. This is a
4:59
true, kind of a homemade mixture for
5:02
your pie.
5:07
Now, make sure you whisk or stir very
5:10
slowly
5:13
so you don't splatter this everywhere.
5:15
Cuz you don't want that.
5:18
Once you have a smooth consistency, you
5:20
can just dribble the rest in.
5:23
Just pour it on in.
5:27
Just keep whisking.
5:29
We want to make sure this comes to a
5:30
boil.
5:33
Now, what we want to do is just keep
5:35
whisking until this thickens up.
5:38
Now, this step right here could take 10
5:40
minutes.
5:43
Now, while I'm whisking this, I'm going
5:44
to show you the pie crust.
5:47
We're going to
5:48
multitask for sure right now.
5:51
So, this is what I'm using right here,
5:52
which is the Keebler chocolate ready
5:55
crust. And that's what Thomas wanted cuz
5:56
he wanted a chocolate crust to go with
5:58
the pie. He's always had pies with the
6:00
regular pie crust, and he really wanted
6:03
a chocolate one this time. So, we found
6:05
this one right here. What's nice about
6:07
this is it has a lid on it. This is a
6:09
9-in pie crust, okay, if you need to
6:13
know. But, you will need a fully cooked
6:16
pie crust. So, if you're going to make
6:17
your own, you just want to make it and
6:19
cool it down completely before the
6:21
mixture is done.
6:25
And then, what I'm going to do is pop
6:27
the lid off of there and have that
6:28
ready.
6:32
Now, I can definitely tell that it is
6:33
thickening up, and you want to keep
6:35
stirring.
6:37
That way it doesn't burn on the pan
6:39
there. So, just go around the sides.
6:42
And then, just make sure you're scraping
6:43
the bottom also. Now, I'm using a
6:45
silicone
6:47
whisk right here. Now, we're getting
6:49
thick here. Perfect.
6:52
So, keep going at it. Whisk it good.
6:54
Keep it nice and smooth.
6:57
See, it's starting to bubble.
6:59
Once you get to that thickness stage,
7:01
turn off your heat.
7:06
Woo, we got it. There we go.
7:11
Let's get our pie crust ready.
7:13
Here's my crust.
7:14
Let's take off the lid. Make sure that
7:17
you take off any of the paper off the
7:19
lid and any glue that's holding the
7:21
paper on. Give that a nice wash and
7:23
cleans it off.
7:25
Here we go.
7:26
Woo, look at that.
7:28
Definitely gives you a pudding
7:30
consistency, right?
7:32
In it goes.
7:40
Woo.
7:43
All right.
7:44
Smooth that out.
7:47
Oh, look at that.
7:49
Nice and even.
7:53
There. Perfect. Beautiful. Beautiful.
7:56
Now, we're going to set this on the
7:58
countertop and let it kind of cool down
8:00
just a little bit. And then we're going
8:02
to cover place it in the refrigerator
8:04
and allow it to set up.
8:07
All right, you guys. I'll be back. Now,
8:10
it's been the next day.
8:13
And I kept it in the refrigerator
8:15
overnight because the center of the pie
8:18
was very warm when we put it in the
8:19
refrigerator and I wanted to make sure
8:20
that it was very set before we cut into
8:24
the pie.
8:25
So,
8:26
and my mom thought that was a good idea
8:27
also.
8:29
So, what I'm going to do is take some
8:31
whipped topping and I'm going to
8:34
make some dollops.
8:42
Here we go.
8:44
All right, what do y'all think?
8:49
Some extra Cool Whip on there.
8:51
I'm going to grab a fork. I'm going to
8:52
give that a try. I wish Thomas was here
8:54
today because I let this sit overnight
8:56
in the refrigerator. He had things to do
8:58
right now, but
8:59
y'all, he's going to love this one.
9:01
That's how easy it comes out of the pan.
9:04
Look at that.
9:08
Let's take a bite.
9:17
Mhm.
9:21
Mhm.
9:24
That is so delicious.
9:28
That chocolate flavor in there
9:30
definitely gives me that cocoa vibe.
9:35
You know, and if you do a pudding pie,
9:36
which I've done before, where you use a
9:39
box of pudding,
9:41
y'all, the flavor is just not totally
9:43
there. This is like rich decadent.
9:48
Mhm.
9:50
Mhm.
9:53
It's very smooth.
9:56
And when you pair it with a chocolate
9:59
pie crust, wow.
10:03
Thomas's granny sure knew what she was
10:05
doing when she made this pie. And Thomas
10:08
knew what he was doing when he would run
10:09
to her house as a little child.
10:11
>> [laughter]
10:12
>> Don't forget your whipped topping.
10:15
This was a very easy pie to put
10:17
together. You saw that happen. Give me a
10:19
thumbs up on this one and y'all let me
10:21
know what you think. Make sure you
10:23
comment down below. If you're new to the

10:33
this one here. I'll see y'all on the
10:36
next episode. Bye.
