Equipment

  • 9 x 9 baking dish
  • medium skillet
  • spatula
  • measuring cups & spoons
  • paper towel
  • large mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • spoon & butter knife

Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
  • 1 LB breakfast pork sausage (Jimmy Dean)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 TBS baking powder
  • 1 TBS white granulated sugar
  • 1 3/4 - 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place a stick of butter into a 9 x 9 baking dish. Place in oven and allow to melt for 5 minutes. Remove baking dish from oven and set aside.
  • In a medium skillet break up and brown sausage until crumbly & browned. Remove sausage to a bowl lined with paper towels to drain.
  • In a large mixing bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, and sugar. Pour in 1 3/4 cup buttermilk. Stir until a wet batter forms. Add additional butter milk if batter is not sticky.
NOTE: if you don't have buttermilk, you can place 2 TBS lemon juice or white vinegar into a measuring cup. Fill with milk to the 2 cup line. Stir with a fork and let sit for 5-10 minutes until slightly thick & curdled.
  • Stir in cheddar cheese & browned crumbled sausage until combined. Spoon mixture into the melted butter in baking dish and smooth evenly.
  • Using a butter knife score the biscuit dough into 9 squares.
  • Bake in preheated 450 degree oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Make sure to test with a toothpick in center of biscuit.
NOTE: cover with foil lightly if browning faster than biscuits cook.
  • Cut biscuits along the preformed lines. Drizzle with maple syrup or honey. Biscuits are delicious along side your favorite style of eggs.
