Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl add dry box cake mix, eggs, water, syrup and melted butter. Mix well with an electric hand mixer for 2 minutes.
Grease & flour 2 (9 inch) cake pans. Divide batter evenly between prepared cake pans.
Place 1 waffle into cake batter of first pan. Flip over waffle so that the battered side of waffle is facing up. Place 2nd waffle onto the battered side of 1st waffle. Press both waffles into batter. (NOTE: This will ensure that the waffles stay moist and together.)
Do these same steps for the other cake pan.
Place both cake pans into preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until toothpick comes out clean and cake is golden brown. (NOTE: Halfway through cooking time, place a small piece of foil on top of the waffle of each cake pan to prevent over browning.
Take pans out of oven and allow cakes to rest for 15 minutes in pans on a wire rack. Then remove cakes from pan and put cakes on wire racks to cool completely.
Place one cooled cake on a serving dish or cake pedestal. Drizzle the waffle cake with maple syrup. Place 2nd cake on top of the syrup covered bottom cake. Pour syrup into holes of waffles on top layer of cake. (NOTE: the syrup will hold both layers together.)
Add melted butter, whipped topping and fresh fruit as a garnish if desired.
