Equipment

  • 2 large mixing bowl
  • electric hand mixer
  • measuring spoons & cups
  • medium mixing bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 (15.25 oz) box devil's food cake mix
  • + ingredients on back of package (eggs, water, oil)
  • 1 pkg Jell-o chocolate instant pudding mix
  • 1 (8 oz) block cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cool whip, thawed
  • 4 oz bakers dark chocolate
  • mini candy bars (cookies & cream and hersheys chocolate)

Instructions

  • Prepare cake batter per directions on back of package for 2 (9 inch) round cake pans. NOTE: For a bakery style cake switch out in equal portions milk in place of the water and melted cooled butter for the oil. Leave the eggs at a count of 3.
    *mix in chocolate pudding mix.
*butter 2 (9 inch) round cake pans thoroughly. Pour batter equally between both cake pans. Spread evenly.
  • Bake cakes in preheated 350 degree oven for the time listed on the cake box for the 2 (9 inch) cakes. Check for doneness using a toothpick.
Allow cakes to rest in cake pans for 10 minutes. Remove cakes to a wire rack and allow to cool completely. Using a bread knife trim off the rounded part of the top of cake to make more even.
  • While cakes are cooling, make the frosting.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese and softened butter until creamy. Add vanilla and beat again.
  • Incorporate 6 cups of powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time while beating it into the cream cheese mixture until smooth.
  • Place pieces of parchment on a cake pedestal. Place one of the cooled cakes on top of the parchment and frost the top of cake evenly. Place 2nd cake on top of frosted cake and frost the top of this layer. Then frost the sides of the 2 layer cake and spread evenly.
  • In a medium microwave safe bowl melt bakers chocolate per instructions on package until it's melted and smooth. Mix in cool whip until it's smooth and pourable. Allow to cool slightly.
  • Pour chocolate over the top of cake slowly to allow chocolate to drip over the sides. Poke pieces of candy bars all over the top of cake as decoration. Enjoy.
