- 1/2 cup butter, cut into cubes

Let's Dry Out The Bread
Line a large deep sheet pan with parchment paper. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Cut the bread into 1" cube shapes. Place bread cubes onto lined sheet pan. Place in oven for 30-40 minutes until dried out.
Butter a 9 x 13 baking dish. Place dried cubed bread into prepared baking dish and set aside.
Make Custard Base
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a medium sauce pan place 2 cups milk and 1/4 cup butter. Stir over medium heat for 4-5 minutes until it starts to simmer. Turn off heat and pour milk mixture all over the bread cubes in baking dish. Press cubes into milk to soften for a few minutes.
In a medium bowl whisk together 1/2 cup white granulated sugar, 2 beaten eggs, 1 TBS vanilla extract, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg.
Pour mixture over the milk soaked bread in baking dish. Stir everything together.
Bake in 350 degree preheated oven for 45-60 minutes until center is set, edges are golden and a toothpick inserted in comes out mostly clean. Let rest on countertop while making the vanilla sauce.
