Gooey Chocolate Butter Cake Bars

Equipment

  • 9 x 13 baking dish
  • non-stick cooking spray with flour
  • 2 large mixing bowls
  • electric hand mixer with beaters
  • spatula
  • measuring cups & spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 (15.25 oz) box dark chocolate cake mix (or other type chocolate cake mix)
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs (DIVIDED)
  • 1 (8 oz) block cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 TBS cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  • In a large mixing bowl using an electric hand mixer beat cake & softened butter together to form a crumb mixture.
  • Beat in 2 eggs until a thick batter has formed. Place batter into prepared baking dish and smooth out evenly.
  • In a separate large mixing bowl beat cream cheese until fluffy using electric hand mixer. Beat in remaining 2 eggs, cocoa powder and vanilla extract until well mixed.
  • Beat in 4 cups of powdered sugar 1 cup at a time until a smooth mixture forms.
  • Pour mixture over the batter in the baking dish and spread evenly. (DO NOT COMBINE BOTH LAYERS.)
  • Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes. Cool before cutting into bar shapes and serving.
