In a medium or large pot, place chopped potatoes and cover with water to 1 inch over the potatoes, season with salt. (2 tsp). Bring to a boil and simmer for 5-7 minutes until par-cooked (which is half way cooked). Turn off burner and drain potatoes and set aside.
In a large bowl mix together ground beef, 1 TBS A-1 steak sauce, 1 tsp garlic powder, 4 TBS ketchup, 1/4 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp black pepper.
Form into 8 small patties or 4 large patties equally. In a large deep skillet heat cooking oil and butter over medium high heat. Place patties into hot skillet and brown 4-5 minutes, then flip over and brown an additional 4-5 minutes. Remove browned patties from skillet.
Add chopped onions to skillet. (Do not remove any liquid from skillet.) Cook onions until lightly browned and softened. Season with salt & pepper. After onions are browned and softened add in 2 cups of beef broth. Bring to a boil.
Add in par-cooked potatoes, simmer for 5 minutes until tender.
In a small bowl make the gravy by whisking together the gravy ingredients listed above. Pour into skillet that has the potatoes and onions, stir and allow gravy to thicken.
Place salisbury steaks back into skillet, spoon gravy over the steaks, place lid on pot, lower heat to a low setting and cook until steaks are cooked through and tender about 5 minutes. Enjoy.
