Monte Cristo Sandwich

Equipment

  • large deep skillet
  • pie plate or narrow dish
  • sheet pan lined with foil with a cooling rack
  • toothpicks

Ingredients

Batter Ingredients

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 TBS sugar
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg

Sandwich Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread
  • 8 slices baby swiss cheese
  • 8 slices deli ham
  • 8 slices deli turkey
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • canola cooking oil
  • powdered sugar
  • strawberry jelly/jam or other favorite flavor

Instructions

  • In a pie plate or narrow bowl sift or whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar. In a measuring cup whisk together milk and egg. Pour egg mixture into dry flour mixture and mix together until smooth.
    (NOTE: this batter generally makes 4 sandwiches.)
  • On a clean work surface mayonnaise 4 slices bread. Layer slice of cheese, 2 slices of ham, 2 slices of turkey, another slice of cheese and top with another piece of bread with mayonnaise. (Make sure mayonnaise side is on the cheese.)
  • Place 4 toothpicks on each corner of sandwich to hold it together. In a large deep skillet add about 1 inch of cooking oil and bring to 350 degree temperature over medium high heat.
  • Take one sandwich at a time and dip into batter to coat. Flip sandwich over carefully to coat the other side. (Let batter drip down the sides also.)
    Place coated sandwich carefully into hot oil and allow to get golden brown on one side before flipping over to other side and cook until golden brown. (Should take 30 seconds to 1 minute to brown on each side.)
  • Remove fried sandwich and place on a wire rack that is place on a foil lined baking sheet. This will held drain sandwich and keep it lightly crispy. Finish preparing and frying up the rest of sandwiches.
  • Cut sandwich in half and dust with powdered sugar. Serve it up with your favorite flavored jelly/jam.
