Air Fryer Blooming Onion with Dipping Sauce

Equipment

  • air fryer
  • sharp knife & cutting board
  • 2 pie plates & whisks

  • medium bowl for dipping & whisk

Ingredients

  • 1 large yellow, white, or other large onion
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt DIVIDED
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper DIVIDED
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder DIVIDED
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika DIVIDED
  • 1/8 tsp ceyenne pepper DIVIDED
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water

Dipping Sauce

  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 TBS sour cream
  • 1-2 TBS horseradish sauce
  • 1 TBS ketchup
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Cut off 1/2 inch from top of onion. Peel off outer layer of onion. Place cut side down on cutting board with root side facing up. Start 1/2 inch from top of onion, cut through onion. Turn onion halfway and cut 1/2 inch from top through onion. Cut 2 more times between the cut sides. Cut through 4 more times. Keep rotating onion and making slits until you have 16 attached wedges.
    Turn onion over and let sit for 5 minutes to allow petals to open up.
  • In a pie plate or medium bowl whisk together flour, 1/4 tsp each of salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and 1/8 tsp ceyenne.
  • In a separate pie plate or medium bowl whisk together eggs, milk, water, and 1/4 tsp each of salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and 1/8 tsp ceyenne.
  • Place onion carefully into seasoned flour and dredge onion entirely making sure to get all in between the onion petals. Shake off excess.
  • Place flour dredged onion into egg mixture and using a spoon coat onion thoroughly.
  • Place onion back into flour mixture and dredge once more. Place onion onto a piece of foil and fold foil like a bowl around onion carefully, not to touch sides of onion.
    Spray top of onion petals with a non-stick avocado oil.
  • Place onion into air fryer basket and set into air fryer. Bake for 20-25 minutes on 360 degrees.
    NOTE: every 5 minutes or so, pull basket out and spray onion petals and continue cooking until onion is golden brown.
  • In a medium bowl whisk together all ingredients for the dipping sauce. Serve with blooming onion and enjoy.
